MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- be a U.S. citizen
- possess a valid driver's license
- be at least 19 and in some cases 21 years of age
- possess a high school diploma or GED
OR
- possess three years in the armed forces of the United States with last release or discharge under honorable conditions
- most departments give preference to those applicants who have been a city resident for one year

HOW TO APPLY
Most police departments in Massachusetts are civil service departments. To apply for a position, applicants must take and pass the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' written police examination. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Human Resources Division administers the Civil Service examination.
The exam is given every two years. The date of the last exam was May 19, 2007. For more information about the examination, contact the Massachusetts Human Resources Division at 617-727-3777 or 1-800-392-6178 or
www.mass.gov/civilservice. There is an examination fee of $50 - $125 which you may be able to get waived if you complete the appropriate waiver forms.
The application and announcement notice for the exam can be usually be obtained at the police department's Human Resources or Personnel Office. However, the application must be submitted directly to the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts Human Resources Division.
